Bug Description

I can boot to login, but if I input correct information it freezes. If I boot in recovery mode and choose to resume boot, I can login. But my external display doesn't register. If I choose the failsafeX version there is an error text related to xorg.

I have not had any problems before on this terminal. It came when I let the system update and reboot.

Rasmus Malver (rasmusmalver) wrote : Re: After Ubuntu Base update tp 4.15.0-46-generic computer freezes after login

I installed an older kernel, and was able to boot and log in. But the external display (HDMI) still didn't work. In desperation I went to Settings -> Users -> Automatic Login.

And now everything works. Apart from the fact that my computer can be used by anyone. So it was a mistake on my part to tag this as a xorg problem. It's clearly to do with the login of the window manager.

Judging by linux-image-4.15.0-46-generic.259292.crash, it appears a kernel crash in the nouveau driver is the problem here.

If you are able and willing to disable the Nvidia GPU in your system BIOS then you might find that also works around the problem.

A different solution would likely to be to install the proprietary Nvidia driver instead:

  sudo apt install nvidia-driver-390

There are two nouveau commits which landed in v4.18-rc6 get backport to Ubuntu's kernel.
Can you test mainline kernel v4.18-rc6 and see if the issue also happens there?

@vanvugt, I installed nvidia-driver-390, and now the second display doesn't work (again). I have removed it, but the damage persists. I'll see what I can do re disabling in BIOS.

@kaihengfeng, I'd like to test the mainline kernel, but could you give me a couple of lines on how? I'm guessing I have to curl some of the files from here https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.18-rc6/ and dpkg them.

I have attached a new crash file from a crash when I tried to boot into an earlier kernel.

I tried installing 4.18, but it persisted. I tried an older kernel, and then the networking stopped working. I tried re-installing Bionic Beaver, and when booting from USB everything works. But after install and update, it's broken again.

I have the same problem

18.04.2 LTS, 4.15.0-46-generic #49

With something perhaps useful :

I have grub for multi-boot, and only this one ubuntu OS installed

-When the computer was on, with ubuntu or another system, a system restart leads me to grub, that leads me to ubuntu, and it is stuck.
-At this point a command like ctrl+alt+del restarts the system, takes me back to grub, that leads to ubuntu, and it keeps hanging.

When i perform a hard reset while it's stuck (computer button), grub leads me to ubuntu that boots instantaneously, no hanging.

Repeated several times.
So for the moment, hard reset is my workaround.

I don't know how apport works so sorry not to feed the issue with one.
(typed apport-collect 1818899, ubuntu replies im not 'abonné' (french)...etc.)

Hi,
just an update, probably not related to the nvidia driver issue itself but perhaps useful for people that stumble upon this page for a similar problem.

The startup hanging et ubuntu logo stopped without updating anything but grub2 when i switched it to verbose mode.

method :

Edit /etc/default/grub and edit the following line:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

Change it to:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="--verbose nosplash debug"

Then, run the following command in a terminal
sudo update-grub2
