Bug Description

I started seeing this bug in Ubuntu 18.04 running VMWare Workstation Pro 14. After upgrading to Ubuntu 18.10 and VMware Workstation 15 the bug still appears. I started to ask questions on the VMware Community, https://communities.vmware.com/thread/604705. Because I had some additional time to troubleshoot I am also noticing that this bug is being reported on other Linux Distributions notably: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1662314

Conditions to reproduce. Laptop is running 2 NVMe drives with Cryptfs on each drive (unsure if this is related). Running Vmware Workstation Pro 15 with a Windows 10 Guest upon shutting down the Windows Guest a kernel stack strace appears in both dmesg -w and /var/log/syslog. The VM does not gracefully stop.

Stack Trace is Below:

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer
to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest
v5.0-rc7 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag:
'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as
"Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

I've been seeing this problem for several years, with different Ubuntu verisons, and still can repro on 20.04, kernel 5.4.0-72-generic.

I think this one is related:
