Bug Description

Memory usage continues to climb to 100%, even as applications are shut down. Swap file is not being used. CPU usage climbs to %100 even as applications are shut down.

After reboot, system will operate normally for a number of hours, until a virtual machine (Virtual Box) is run. At this point memory and CPU usage will climb until %100. Exiting programs and closing the VM does not resolve the issue.

then maybe some settings to do in VirtualBox ?
Or a bug there ?

No. Closing VirtualBox means that the memory usage should be released. If the memory is still tied up after the program has closed with no processes running, then the kernel is at fault as it is the one controlling memory.

Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a prior kernel version where you were not having this particular problem?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.19 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.
