Happens when not doing anything, return to find frozen or freezing windows (last case Google Chrome was greyed out, then Terminal became unresponsive and finally whole session, no response from Caps Lock so hard reset performed.

I would expect it's one of the following:
Google Chrome plugin (need to use for work)
Skype (from Microsoft Skype directly, not Snap which caused issues immediately!)
Virtual Call Centre - deb package direct from source https://vcc.live/

I have no way to know whether any of the above caused this issue or whether it's compositing desktop demons at play, so if anyone can interpret the above, I can chase up with any 3rd party as required (presuming there is no Ubuntu/kernel/X problem at play here)

If more info needed I am happy to provide.

Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a prior kernel version where you were not having this particular problem?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.18 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Impossible to tie it down to upgrade or specific action or app at this point, been happening unpredictably over last month or so, it could be related to recent requirement to use Skype/VCC for work....I'll try installing the latest upstream mainline and see how it goes and let you know. May take while as I can't reliably reproduce the issue, usually seems to happen during computer idle time mid work session....

Done.
Latest linux-headers have dependency on libssl1.1 https://packages.ubuntu.com/bionic/amd64/libssl1.1/download whichis not available in 16.04 but no problem installing that manually. Now will wait and see if issue returns, may take a few days.

Been running a few days on latest 4.18.0-041800rc8 and so far no crashes, so a tentative "fixed" might be appropriate now. Of course this message may be just the curse needed to replicate the issue! (I'll update if so)

I'm still none the wiser as to what might have been fixed or what caused the issue in the first place....

Still no hangs/freezes/crashes in the last week so looks like issue either fixed in upstream kernel or was fixed in Skype/VCC!

I guess this could be marked "Fix released"
