Bug Description

I apologise in advance, this is my first report, therefore I am not sure if everything has been automatically collected, or if I need to provide further information than a short explanation of the problem.

After updating the kernel at 4.4.0-128 on Ubuntu 16.04, first I had massive problems with the sound drivers. Then they disappeared (by themselves I would say, I had many tests but I don't think I screwed up anything serious) and, instead, now my sistem freezes at login screen. Sometimes it gives me the message that the wireless has been found. The mouse is available but I cannot interact with the screen, and also the clock is frozen. I have to brutally switch off the laptop for rebooting. A further kernel update to 4.4.0-130 didn't help, either.

Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a prior kernel version where you were not having this particular problem?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.18 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Same issue.
Works OK on 4.4.0-127-generic but freezes on 128/130.

Noticed that it might be some issue with audio as no 'login' sound played when login screen is shown.

Thanks for your feedback.

Joseph, the issue started after updating the kernel to 4.4.0-128. The version 4.4.0-127 is the last one working correctly. The issue started as a sound driver problem (drivers were somehow completely gone), but when I first experienced it I could still login. Afterwards it started freezing at the login screen. This corroborates the comment from Oleksii.

For testing the latest upstream kernel, I followed the procedure described in the page you provided. Unfortunately, while installing the kernel files, I had an issue with a dependency from libssl1.1 which is not installed, and as far as I can see not available for Ubuntu 16.04. Do you have any suggestion for solving this, other than upgrading (which I would avoid for the time being)? Sorry, as I already mentioned it is my first contribution to a bug report.

I am sorry that I could not contribute in the way described above. Any chance that my request can be processed anyway? I see that there is no activity on this, and at some point this report will expire. Just to provide a little update: the version 4.4.0-131 does not improve the problem. I am convinced that it has to do with the audio, as Oleksii described.
Thanks in advance.

4.4.0-133 also didn't fixed the issue.

Just for the records: I upgraded my Ubuntu to 18.04.1, running the kernel 4.15.0-36-generic, and the problem disappeared.
