Crash happens on 16.04 with kernel 4.13.0-39.

I built a test kernel with commit 3d8bba9535ac6e79453c769dd0c8ea852a51ad60. The test kernel can be downloaded from:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~jsalisbury/lp1767204

Can you test this kernel and see if it resolves this bug?

Note, to test this kernel, you need to install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

Confirmed I didn't get the error with your perf binary. However, I found another bug and patch. I'll open another bug and tag you.
