Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.22-14-generic

I am running Gutsy, all packages updated from the repos, on a Sony Vaio SZ650N.

I get good sound from the notebook's internal speakers, but no sound from the headphones, and inserting the headphones does not turn off the speakers.

Can you try installing the 'linux-backports-modules' package and see if this helps? Thanks.

Also, the Hardy Heron Alpha2 release will be coming out soon (around Dec 20). It will have an updated version of the kernel. It would be great if you could test with this new release and verify if this issue still exists. I'll be sure to update this report when Alpha2 is available. Thanks!

Leann,

There's no improvement after installing linux-backports-modules on Gutsy.

Apparently this bug can be fixed on Gutsy by compiling a new version of ALSA like this guy did:

Hi Michael,

Thanks for trying. linux-backports-modules actually contains an updated version of ALSA, version 1.0.15 so I was hoping it would resolve your issue but it looks like it didn't. When the Alpha2 release if available, it would be much appreciated if you could retest via the LiveCD. Thanks!

I'm opened a new task against the actively developed kernel and am closing the report against linux-source-2.6.22. Thanks!

This bug can be fixed in Gutsy by adding the following lines to /etc/modprobe.conf (which is then moved to /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf )

alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-card-0 index=0
options snd-hda-intel index=0 model=vaio

Headphones now play sound and turn off the internal speakers.

However, the internal microphone still does not work -
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.22/+bug/175674

See the attached screenshot - the "switches" tab is new since this edit to modprobe.conf (however it is still not the same as this screenshot http://moelhave.dk/wp-content/uploads/2007/09/screenshot-volume-control-hda-intel-alsa-mixer.png , with the internal mic enabled)

ALSA version 1.0.15 as per linux-backports-modules

which also fixes

looks like Hardy just has to do a little extra config during installation - alsaconf works well

alsa-utils (1.0.15-1ubuntu1) hardy; urgency=low

  * Merge from Debian unstable.
  * Ubuntu-specific changes:
    - debian/control:
      + Add bzr URI,
      + Add lpia to supported arches,
      + Adhere to DebianMaintainerField;
    - debian/init:
      + Mute 'IEC958' by default,
      + Unmute 'Master Surround', 'Audigy Analog/Digital Output Jack';
    - debian/modprobe-post-install-part: Remove - not used;
    - Don't install alsaconf.

It seems premature to leave out alsaconf when the only alternative is manually hacking config files
