Can you boot if you select "Recovery Mode" from the GRUB menu? You can get to the GRUB menu by holding the SHIFT key after poweron and seeing the BIOS screen.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.16 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

1. "Recovery Mode" from the GRUB menu is working good.
2. "GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=text" is working good.
3. "GRUB_TERMINAL=console" is working good.

Same issue with Gateway LT20 Netbook (Intel 945GM chipset and 1024x600 display) running Xubuntu 16.04
Problem began with latest update to Linux 4.13.0-45-generic kernel.
Using recovery mode barely usable but stretches 800x600 across the display.
Booting with 4.10.0-42-generic eliminates the problem.
