Ubuntu system hangs suddenly

Whenever I ran Vlc media player and when I seek in the video, it struck automatically, left me to restart again the laptop.

Also sometimes it happens with other applications too.

Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a prior kernel version where you were not having this particular problem?
