You may need to run the following from a terminal:

sudo apt-get install -f
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update

Then re-install the package or updates.

I tried running the the suggested fix as follows:

sudo apt-get install -f
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update

The error still persists.

Fixed it by usingsynaptic package manager to reinstall affected header. Confirmed repair by running sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic, which no longer showed an error.
