Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a prior kernel version where you were not having this particular problem?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.14 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

This has been going on for awhile. Related bug #1682921
The last time it worked right (if memory serves) was the LTS kernel that shipped with 16.04.
I will test mainline as time permits.

You'll forgive me if I am not interested in filing this issue upstream. As an end user, my time is somewhat limited, and I have heard far too many horror stories about getting ones head chewed off by kernel developers (
https://www.networkworld.com/article/2988850/opensource-subnet/linux-kernel-dev-sarah-sharp-quits-citing-brutal-communications-style.html springs immediately to mind).

I guess if you need to close this issue out, I'll put 16.04 back on this kit and try to find it a happy home.

Intel GFX folks are nice guys.

Eventually the issue will reappear once 16.04 hit EOL. I guess it’s better to solve it sooner rather than later.

Hi there, I am having this issue too on the same hardware.

This laptop is currently running 14.04 32 bits.

With 14.04 32 bits, there is a message in the log, but it has no effect but spitting messages in the log!

With 18.04 64bits live, there is the "flip_done timed out" issue. Each one seems to take 10 seconds, then after some attempts it continues normally.
Once it has booted (it takes ~5 minutes due to the "timeouts"), all seems to work fine.

I made an attempt booting 18.04 64bits with "nomodeset", the boot time is normal (for a live with this kind of hardware) but we then loose graphic acceleration and it makes it impossible for example to watch a HD movie, also firefox is noticeably slower same as GLXGears.

I had 16.04.1 on my USB drive, and it was still working with 16.04.1 (just some messages in the log). With 16.04.4 there is the same bug as with 18.04.

That should narrow down the regression between the kernels of 16.04.1 and 16.04.4

Here are some complementary informations for 14.04 and 18.04:

As requested above, I filed the bug at freedektop.

More information.

I have narrowed it down:

16.04.1 - kernel 4.4.0-31-generic
==> Works OK with messages ("encoder detached but still enabled on pipe A.")
No visible slowdown apart for 3 or 4 stack traces in the log.

16.04.2 - kernel 4.8.0-36-generic
==> Shows the "time outs" bug

So there must have been a change that is affecting i915 between kernels 4.4. and 4.8

Steps to reproduce:
- live boot on 16.04.1
- see all is Ok apart from some messages in the log
- live boot on 16.04.2
- see the boot takes much much more time and there are numerous timeouts messages.

I have posted a full dmesg with the 'drm-tip' kernel compiled especially.

Please see "upstream" (link above) for details.

Hello, since the ticket I reported for that bug on freedesktop.org has now been moved to "high" importance by an Intel person, might I suggest that this is also moved to "high" accordingly?

A workaround was offered "upstream" in Comment #11:

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=106422#c11

I tested it successfully so far on my hardware (Inspiron 1525).

1. add "video=SVIDEO-1:d" to your kernel boot options

I still have to confirm the workaround has no other important side effect. Since I am not in front of the PC (it is 1000km away, and I am accessing it through SSH), I can't really see what is happening nor check all the graphic acceleration is still there.

This test will be done later, 1st week of June, when I'll have access to the PC.

Then I'll have to find how to make a specific option stick cleanly in grub with new patched kernels!
