Here's a couple more with this error message:

162908 - Bad CD locks up SATA system
148466 - Bug in pata_serverworks kernel module, workaround with libata.pata_dma=1

These two bugs have some interesting suggestions that the issue is bad error handling in the SATA kernel module. Several bugs seem to be in systems with both SATA and PATA devices, so maybe there is a conflict or incompatibility between them?
