Bug Description

I installed an new hp 8710 office jet on 10/5/2017 and downloaded third party hp drivers from 123.hp.com. Every thing worked just fine. I unfortunately upgraded 16.04 to stay current and my printer quit printing with a status of stopped - missing cups filter. I've unplugged, rebooted, deleted printer, tried to re-download printer drivers - nothing works. The only printer settings status is printer is not configured.

I think this is also related to: Sorry Ubuntu 16.04 has experienced internal errors, that keeps appearing. HP filters have been deleted out of /usr/lib/cups.... due to an 16.04 upgrade. Now third partly printer drivers can't be downloaded and installed. Need help!

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.14 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Hi Paul,
This was a while back. But I did have the backend cups problem, same as you.
As I recall I had to install the latest upgrade, from the Ubuntu printer repository, of their printer codes. With me the printer just stopped working, after my being on 16.04 for a while. The help that I received eventually solved the problem, details of this are on the thread given with my question, which I fear I don't recall in any detail. (I don't use bluetooth).
Hope this helps.
Richard

I have a laptop the runs Ubuntu 15.04. I installed my hp 8710 office jet with no problem. The printer works just fine. I will try and do what you suggest to confirm the status or bug 1723112.
It's been awhile since I have used terminal commands.

This is what I got when I went to the following web site.
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install_wizard/index.html

You have selected Ubuntu 16.04 using the HP Officejet Pro 8710 All-in-one Printer.

Ubuntu 16.04 supplies HPLIP 3.15.2 by default, which does not support your printer.

You must ensure latest HPLIP version (recommemded), or at least HPLIP 3.16.5 in order to use your printer with Ubuntu 16.04.

I tried to get the latest HPLIP 3.17.... but it failed. fixing this problem is beyond my skills i.e. testing an upstearm kernal.

If I could I would revert back to ubuntu 15.04.

I've found the solution to the problem but I can't implement it. I don't even know if the right persons will even read this. I guess I just have wait and see if the latest HPLIP will be attached to ubuntu 16.04.

Ubuntu 16.04 LTS is configured with HPLIP 3.15.2 by default.
Ubuntu 17.04, which is not LTS, is configured with HPLIP 3.17.9 but no convenient way to upgrade to it and will not be supported after January 2018. Since Ubuntu 16.04 is going to be supported for the next 5 years, it needs to have the most current version of HPLIP configured with it.

Re-installed HPLIP 3.15.2.run on my desktop pc and configured my printer via 123.hp.com. My hp 8710 office jet now works again. Problem solved!

I got my printer working again by downloading and applying HPLIP-3.15.2.run
to my ubuntu 16.04 OS. Thanks
