Bug Description

Ubuntu will not boot on my ASUS UX501VW-FJ045T, unless I use the NOMODESET option in GRUB.

I disabled the splashscreen and I could see that the system hangs when trying to detect the GPU(s) showing the message:

"A start job is running for detect the available GPUs and deal with any system changes "
The laptop features Optimus technology, with an Intel HD Graphics 530 and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M

You can see the error in the picture attached to the report.

Ubuntu version: UBUNTU GNOME 17.04 X64

I am more than willing to help with this with further testing or information, if needed

Thank you!

Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a prior kernel version where you were not having this particular problem?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.12 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Hi Joseph,

thank you for getting back to me.

I tried with the upstream kernel and the issue is not present there.

So I tagged the bug accordingly to your instructions and marked it as Confirmed.

Happy to help further if that should be needed.

Alessandro

Could you also test the latest upstream stable 4.10 kernel? It is available from:

Hello,

apologize for the delay but I did the testing. The system boots with the latest upstream as well

Thank you for your support!

so far, I have not been able to successfully boot either from live cd usb trial or with the install. I will attach files from apport if that changes.
