Bug Description

With Dell E7440 with Intel graphics, attached to dock and also two external displays connected to the dock:

when I boot the machine, the built-in display and the external displays are enabled in login screen. However, the external displays are disabled when I log in.

All displays remain enabled after login with 4.4.0-72.93. I never installed 4.4.0-73.94 or 4.4.0-74.95 but I can see in the changelog that there were i915 changes in 4.4.0-73.94.

The external displays are shown and are marked enabled in KDE's System Settings / Display and Monitor / Display Configuration. If I first mark them disabled (and apply the configuration) and then mark them enabled (and apply the configuration), they are actually enabled.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream stable kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.4 stable kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

I rebooted today and now none of my three monitors (DVI, VGA, Displayport) are not working with the docking station. Network, Power, and USB functions still work.

I did update to 4.4.0-75 stable.

I have a Dell Latitude E7470. I updated the BIOS to the latest version. When I go to displays nothing can be detected. I will verify the HDMI, and mini-display ports without the docking station when I get home as I have no adapters at work. I had cleaned out my kernel versions, but going back two versions did not work yet. I will keep trying and will look into my logs.

Cheers,

Jeremy

Update, I am able to use the displayport and the hdmi interfaces on the back of my laptop. Issue appears to be related to use of the docking station.

Cheers,

Tested with v4.4.65, the latest v4.4 stable kernel as of this writing. The problem happens with that as well.

kernel-bug-exists-upstream tag added and the bug marked Confirmed as instructed (even though "Confirmed" description says "Verified by someone other than the reporter.")

I have a Dell Latitude E7450 here and can confirm the problem. As soon as I try to activate both monitors over the docking station I end up in a kernel panic. When I go back to to 4.4.0-72-generic all works as expected.

Can you ensure you have the linux-image AND linux-image-extra .deb packages installed?

@jsailsbury: At least for my case the extra package is installed for all kernel versions.

I have linux-image-extra-${ver}-generic for each normal Ubuntu linux-image-${ver}-generic package.

There are no linux-image-extra packages for upstream kernels in http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.4.*/
