Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1682184/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

This bug is missing log files that will aid in diagnosing the problem. From a terminal window please run:

apport-collect 1682184

and then change the status of the bug to 'Confirmed'.

If, due to the nature of the issue you have encountered, you are unable to run this command, please add a comment stating that fact and change the bug status to 'Confirmed'.

This change has been made by an automated script, maintained by the Ubuntu Kernel Team.

I had another system crash last night, and two this morning. I then installed the daily mainline kernel and have been running for a few hours without any issues. I think this issue is resolved in the updated kernel.

Could you try the 4.10 mainline build and see if the bug exists there?

If that one fails for you we have a straight-forward path for bisecting to find out what fixed the issue.

Will monitor and see if there are any more system crashes. I will update in a few hours.

Mainline v4.10 seems to have fixed the issue.

However, now I am getting a Bluetooth error on startup. This does not seem to impact actual use though as I can still do an audio sync and stream to my main receiver.

Up and running for over an hour with VirtualBox, MySQL, Eclipse, Thunderbird and Chrome operating smoothly (I am primarily a Java developer).

painter@merlin:~$ uname -a
Linux merlin 4.10.0-041000-generic #201702191831 SMP Sun Feb 19 23:33:19 UTC 2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

painter@merlin:~$ uptime
 14:44:22 up 1:11, 1 user, load average: 0.28, 0.20, 0.16

This kernel is also working nicely with the NVIDIA drivers (the 4.11 wouldn't load).

Thanks!

If it doesn't exist in 4.10 then it's either one of our "sauce" patches or one of the 4.10 stable updates. We should be able to run a bisect to find out what broke it though, which for you will basically mean testing a series of kernels to help us zero in on the change which causes this issue.

I'd like to perform a bisect to figure out what commit caused this regression. We need to identify the earliest kernel where the issue started happening as well as the latest kernel that did not have this issue.

Can you test the following kernels and report back? We are looking for the first kernel version that exhibits this bug:

4.10.2: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.10.2/
4.10.4: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.10.4/

4.10.8: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.10.8/

You don't have to test every kernel, just up until the kernel that first has this bug. Then we can narrow it down further.

Thanks in advance!

So far I have test v4.10.2, v4.10.4 and v4.10.6 - each time running Thunderbird, Chrome, RhythmBox, Eclipse and then starting up stress to push a system load (20-25 minutes each). I originally saw some funky performance within the first few minutes with the kernel that started this thread, but so far I haven't seen any issues.

I will test v4.10.8 next and see if it breaks.

Thanks

I installed v4.10.8 and left stress running on for about an hour. Just got back and the system has been stable for the past 5 hours without any failures.

As can be seen above, except in one instance I've mostly enjoyed several hours of work before the issue hit me.

Grepping syslog for kernel versions it looks like the earliest I've had this happen was with 4.10.0-15. Previously I had been running with 4.10.0-14 since at least Apr 5 17:20:50 (earliest syslog timestamp still on filesystem).
