Just to rule out the case of bad compatibility between the STA on the router (Quantenna QSR1000 chipset, QT3840BC SoC in case of my RT-87U) and the client WNIC I also checked with a different STA. So the second router's 802.11ac hardware is Compex_WLE900VX Qualcomm Atheros QCA9880 (V2) which uses ath10k driver as well. Therefore, I've tested laptop's ath10k on 4.10 with router's ath10k on 4.4 kernel: root@turris:~# uname -r 4.4.39-80079e1c1e5f9ca7ad734044462a761a-4 root@turris:~# lspci -vvv 02:00.0 Network controller: Qualcomm Atheros QCA986x/988x 802.11ac Wireless Network Adapter Control: I/O- Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr+ Stepping- SERR+ FastB2B- DisINTx+ Status: Cap+ 66MHz- UDF- FastB2B- ParErr- DEVSEL=fast >TAbort- SERR-
