Bug Description

Running Ubuntu 16.10 on an Asus UX51 laptop; i915+Nvidia dual graphics using the Nouveau driver.

The machine has both VGA out and HDMI out; VGA works like a charm but HDMI is not even detected. Meaning that none of (xrandr, lspci, aplay, get-edid) even reports the HDMI port as present.

It's not clear to me whether or not this is an X or a kernel issue at the heart of it. I did, however, upgrade recently from 16.04 (where this bug was also present!) to see if that made any difference (which it did not) and I did try the proprietary Nvidia drivers (340 and 367) to see if either of them made a difference (which they did not).

I can assure you that I've read every relevant-sounding bug report and askubuntu question from the past year on this topic without discovering any fixes. Happy to try what needs to be tried.

Brad Figg (brad-figg) wrote : Missing required logs.

This bug is missing log files that will aid in diagnosing the problem. From a terminal window please run:

apport-collect 1660949

and then change the status of the bug to 'Confirmed'.

If, due to the nature of the issue you have encountered, you are unable to run this command, please add a comment stating that fact and change the bug status to 'Confirmed'.

This change has been made by an automated script, maintained by the Ubuntu Kernel Team.

Changed in linux (Ubuntu):
status: New → Incomplete

I don't believe that the "issue I have encountered" has an effect on this, but running apport-collect as suggested does nothing but initiate an OAuth token loop at the Launchpad site, with me authorizing this machine followed by ... nothing happening on the terminal or on the site.

Repeating the apport-collect command a second time produces exactly the same effect: complaint about authorization, me authorizing on the site, nothing happening afterward.

Setting aside the issue of opening a new bug report against apport-collect, what is *supposed* to be the result?

status: Incomplete → Confirmed

Seriously: please tell me *what* logs are needed here if apport-collect cannot — and I will provide them.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.10 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

That's not possible for me to do; sorry.

Is there a specific reason to think that the bug is fixed in 4.10?

Again:: what logs would you like to see for this? I am happy to provide them, but you have to tell me which are needed.
