Bug Description

The laptop does not suspend on closing the lid, if a DisplayPort monitor is connected. It does suspend normally on closing the lid if no external monitor is connected.

Syslog notes:
Dec 13 21:19:11 down kernel: [ 1627.804109] i915 0000:00:02.0: BAR 6: [??? 0x00000000 flags 0x2] has bogus alignment

WORKAROUND: Suspend using method other than lid-closing, e.g. using the System Menu on the desktop.

Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a prior kernel version where you were not having this particular problem?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.9 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

AFAIK issue has always been present. Will try the upstream kernel.

Yeah, upstream kernel 4.9.0-040900 does not fix the problem. Happy to help debug in any other way.

Description was updated to be totally inaccurate. The problem is that the laptop does not suspend when the external monitor is attached. The problem is *not* that it doesn't resume from suspend.

The bug is that it will not suspend when the monitor is attached and the lid is closed. To suggest disconnecting the monitor as a workaround is somewhat unhelpful and akin to the old doctor joke of "it hurts when I do this", "then stop doing that".

James Ferguson:

>"Description was updated to be totally inaccurate."

The original Description you inputted originally was precisely:
"The laptop appears to suspend/resume fine stand-alone, but if a DisplayPort monitor is connected, it does not."

Please take care when creating bug reports going forward, so folks don't become confused as to the exact bug reproduction scenario.

>" To suggest disconnecting the monitor as a workaround is somewhat unhelpful"

A WORKAROUND is not a suggestion but a fact, and helpful for those folks who want to suspend now while waiting for a fix to be developed.

Despite this, as per http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/Laptops-and-netbooks/ThinkPad-T-Series-laptops/ThinkPad-T450s/20BX?tabName=Downloads&linkTrack=Mast:SubNav:Support:Drivers%20and%20Software|Drivers%20and%20Software&beta=false an update to your computer's buggy, insecure, and outdated BIOS is available (1.27). When you update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate how does this improve the situation?

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette .

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful.

Also, you don't have to create a new report.

It is most helpful that after the BIOS is updated, if the problem is still reproducible:
1) Please provide the output of the following terminal command (not perform an apport-collect):
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date
2) Please make a comment specifically advising on how this improves the situation.
3) Please mark this report Status Confirmed.

If it's not reproducible, please mark this as Invalid.

Thank you for your help.

My description was ambiguous; it did not explicitly state that suspend was not *initiated*, rather than suspend/resume failing. I apologize for the confusion caused. I think I have updated it to make the issue more clear.

Your workaround would have been helpful if the transformation you made to the nature of the bug was accurate. Again, I apologize for creating an ambiguous description, but I would suggest asking the submitter for clarification in such a case.

I will update the BIOS and check it out. Thank you for your efforts and I am sorry that I did not create a clear description initially. It's often difficult to perceive how your words may be misconstrued but I could definitely have taken more care in the submission.

Unfortunately, the BIOS/UEFI update did not improve the situation. Suspend is still not triggered when the lid is closed, IF a (DisplayPort) monitor is attached.
