xubuntu Live - not able to get network to recognixe static IP

Bug Description

the system is a Dell OptiPlex GX620 with nVidia 7100 PCIx card installed.
After live CD is runnng with full Desktop.
I call up network manager and change to static IP and type in IP Netmask gateway and DNS servers. and apply
I am unable to connect to the internet.
When I ping the gateway IP I get the "network Not available" msg.

Also during the first start from the CD the kybd is inactive at the boot options boot screen - then default install proceeds.
this bug was reported under "[Bug 164651] USB kybd not active at install screen" and applies to Xubuntu
