USB kybd not active at install screen

The system is a Dell Optiplex GX620 (no PS2 input) + nVidia 7100 in PCIx slot
When I attempt to install Ubuntu 7.10 alternatve the CD/DVD starts and hangs on the install screen
The kybd Numlock is on (lite) but keys are not active.
When I attempt to install Ubuntu 7.10 Desktop the kybd is inactive - then default install starts after 30 second timeout.
loads the Kernel but after some 10 min of install the system hangs hard. pressing the Power button is the only solution.

I did not fix it but fell back to a PS2 kybd for install
