Bug Description

Fresh installation of Ubuntu 16.04 and even after executing ifconfig <Iface name> up, the network interface is not coming up. Below are the kernel and driver details:

lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 16.04
Release: 16.04

cat /proc/version_signature
Ubuntu 4.4.0-47.68-generic 4.4.24

sudo lspci -vnvn > lspci-vnvn.log

Basically bnxt_en driver needs to be updated with latest HWRM spec.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.9 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

I have upgraded the kernel to 4.9.0-040900rc5-generic and the issue mentioned in this defect is resolved. However, as part of our testing whenever the command -

ethtool -L enp5s0f0 other 0 rx 18 combined 0 tx 18

is executed on NIC is going down. If I am trying to up the interface I am getting below error.

ifconfig enp5s0f0 up
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Operation not permitted

In-order to make the interface up, we need to remove and load the bnxt_en driver again.

Please find the card details.

ethtool -i enp5s0f0
driver: bnxt_en
version: 1.5.0
firmware-version: 20.6.39/1.5.4 pkg 20.06.00.25
expansion-rom-version:
bus-info: 0000:05:00.0
supports-statistics: yes
supports-test: no
supports-eeprom-access: yes
supports-register-dump: no
supports-priv-flags: no

Please let me know if I need to closed this defect and open a new defect to track this issue and what all logs you need for this?

Looks like the issue is resolved in 4.4.35 kernel.
Which kernel version is pushed to 16.04 release 4.9.x or 4.4.x?

16.04 is based on the 4.4 kernel. The 16.04 -proposed kernel now has the 4.4.35 stable updates.

Would it be possible for you to test this latest kernel and post back if it resolves this bug?
See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to enable and use -proposed.
