I/O Errors on eMMC Drives during Ubuntu Install

Bug Description

While attempting to install ubuntu server (16.04.1) on an Intel Atom based SoM with integrated eMMC flash for onboard storage (4GB samsung flash chip), the install fails towards the end of the package install section due to I/O errors by the kernel. Error are similar to the one below:

Buffer I/O error on dev mmcblk0p2, logical block 9914, lost async page write

Obviously I can't produce a log of the exact output since the I/O error prevents the log from being written. I can take a screenshot if that would be helpful.

Seems like this is related to Bug # 1422338
