Bug Description

Lcd panel brightness adjustment doesn't exist on gnome power manager. I also couldn't find laptop panel from Hardware information. Function keys to adjust screen brightness do work. This applies to Ubuntu 7.10 x86.

On 7.04 the lcd panel is recognized and brightness adjustment does exit in power manager. I checked out this running livecd. I found modules ibm-acpi and backlight loaded (+many others), when on 7.10 only thinkpad-acpi is loaded. Module backlight doesn't seem to exist on 7.10. So this could possibly be a kernel issue.

I only tested interpid from livecd running on AC power. Keyboard shortcut keys work. Panel isn't always recognized by gnome power management, in fact the behaviour is similar as on hardy. Sometimes power management recognizes panel only after changing screen brightness by function keys. There seems to be also more problems on gnome power management, it seemed to hang or crash time to time, but no application crash dialog was opened. I don't know how to figure out are these problems related to kernel/acpi or gnome power management.

Very odd thing is that on interpid I seem to have more range on screen brightness adjustment than on other ubuntus I've tested and on windows. Decreasing brightness by keyboard I can completely black the screen, that wasn't before possible.

For production usage I have hardy installed.
