Bug Description

Seems this is common enough to have a few requests on Ask Ubuntu:
http://askubuntu.com/search?q=16.04+freeze

I would update my kernel, as suggested, however there are not clear instructions and I have had issues doing kernel upgrades in the past. The freezes are not Chrome only, as they also occur when Chrome is not running, though, from memory, Steam uses some of the same things as Chrome. Once the freeze happens a hard reset (holding down the power button) and restarting is the only solution (I can't even open a CLI instance).

Thanks for your time, hope there is a fix soon. Best regards,

Taz

Hi, I just upgraded the kernel using the instructions here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds
Now I'm running 4.4.9-040409-generic (according to uname -r).
Since that seems to be your suggestion for other users with this same issue. Let me know if you want me to do something else. I've only been running it for a few minutes, I'll let you know if/when it freezes too.

I now have and issue where grub no longer shows, and I boot straight into this kernel, so I hope this one works. :)

It froze after about half an hour, in exactly the same way as before. If you have something you would like me to run to give you more information please let me know. Thanks!

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.6 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

The update appears to have worked, however I no longer have a working wifi card, which is unfortunate. When I go to modprobe wl it says there is no wl in the kernel. Is that because I accidentally installed the 'low latency' version? Should I uninstal that?

Never mind, I fixed the issue (unselected the broadcom driver in 'additional drivers' and re-added it). Heh, thank-you. So far I haven't had any freezing. I'll use the laptop more tomorrow, and let you know.

Suffered from this bug for 3 months. Tried more than 12 solutions suggested by WWW. Given up and downgraded to Ubuntu 14.04 last week. No recurrence at all.

mickEDK, it will help immensely if you filed a new report with Ubuntu, using the default repository kernel (not mainline/upstream/3rd party) via a terminal:
ubuntu-bug linux
