Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a prior kernel version where you were not having this particular problem?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.5 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

I have the same problem, using the 16.04 Ubuntu release build, with latest updates. Kernel is 4.4.0-21-generic AMD64. Dell XPS13 9350, with 1.0.4 firmware, Intel i5-6200U, 4GB RAM, 6GB Swap.

Suspend/Resume works fine. The hibernate seems to stop towards the end of the process, just before it powers down. Screen is blank, keyboard backlight goes out, etc. It doesn't get over that final hurdle.

It looks like this can be fixed by unloading the brcmfmac module (rmmod brcmfmac) before hibernating and reloading it (modprobe brcmfmac) after hibernating.

I can confirm the same behavior on an XPS 9550 with Ubuntu 16.04 and kernel 4.4.0-31-generic. Unloading the brcmfmac driver does indeed allow the system to hibernate successfuly. If it is still loaded the system goes to a black screen and doe not turn off. The 9550 has the BCM43602 chip.

I can confirm it works fine on developer edition - this has the intel wireless chip.

Not sure if this is worth anything but I have been using lubuntu 16.04 for a while now and had occasional problems with suspend. I thought I'd give some of the other desktops a try and ended up going through a world of pain (and many lost hours...). For starters pm-hibernate showed the behaviour reported above and pm-suspend was far more fickle. Whatever was being called when I just closed the laptop was causing freezing upon attempting to get the desktop back - I tried experimenting with changing what was in /etc/systemd/logind.conf but it didn't seem to matter (not that I'm sure what that file does...) - hard reset was always necessary.

In any case, removing ubuntu-desktop, kubuntu-desktop and all associated packages, then reinstalling sddm and chosing lightdm as my default DM (not sure that last part was necessary) has everything back working how it was before my misadventures with more "advanced" desktops...
