Ralph,
I tried 'sudo tcpdump -i eth0 -n' and at the same time I run Synaptic PM and hit the Reload button.
The attached tcpdump file shows the reply I got. It started at 22:18:01 and ended 2 minutes later by pressing the Cancel button, because the procedure couldn't go on.
The message I got from Synaptic PM, after canceling, is the usual:
Could not download all repository indexes

The repository might be no longer available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and the correct writing of the repository address in the preferences.

I hope all these comments make sense to you, coz I am lost!
I believe someone from Canonical needs to pay attention to this bug, as more and more persons seems to be affected, according to forums.
