Bug Description

I am not sure whether this is related to Xorg because of following:

Today it happened a few times this complete freeze. Before today never happened. Today I did a normal system update in the morning, then a ditro upgrade which just upgraded a few unimportant packages, then the first freeze happened. Later I upgraded the kernel from 3.19.0 to 4.2.0 and after that a few more freezes happened. I attached the apt log generated today and including the last update yesterday: apt_log_for_day_with_upgrade_to_kernel4.2.log. Each time this happened, before freeze I saw in the log something like:

9492 Mar 2 14:00:08 my-ubunty kernel: [ 2514.659171] [drm] HPD interrupt storm detected on connector HDMI-A-1: switching from hotplug detection to polling

And once or twice I saw right after that something like:

   9493 Mar 2 14:01:13 my-ubuntu compiz: pam_ecryptfs: seteuid error
Then some binary content

I also use disk encryption (the one from Ubuntu).

Each time the freezing happened, the mouse and keyboard weer dead and the screen was frozen in whatever content was displaying at that point. So the only think I could do is to press the power button for 5 seconds.

I upgraded from 3.19 kernel (linux-generic-lts-vivid) as follows:
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install linux-generic-lts-wily

Thank you.

While the freeze with the "[drm] HPD interrupt..." message happened 4 times yesterday afternoon after installing the 4.2 kernel, this morning (early morning) I reverted to 3.19 kernel and no freezes happened anymore afterwards. So this really looks like a problem with the 4.2 kernel. I will try to move this bug from Xorg to kernel.

Hi Christopher,

Thank you for your answer. I did update today from BIOS and I will try the 4.2 kernel again, just not today because I had more than enough and unexpected "excitement" for a day with updating the BIOS from Linux...

However, like I said before, when I updated the bios, I just used the command:

sudo apt-get install linux-generic-lts-wily

Today I saw on the page https://wiki.ubuntu.com/TrustyTahr/ReleaseNotes#LTS_Hardware_Enablement_Stack a command that updates a few more packages (Xorg) in addition to the kernel when installing the 4.2 kernel:

sudo apt-get install --install-recommends linux-generic-lts-wily xserver-xorg-core-lts-wily xserver-xorg-lts-wily xserver-xorg-video-all-lts-wily xserver-xorg-input-all-lts-wily libwayland-egl1-mesa-lts-wily

So my question is: is it enough to just try like before only updating the kernel itself, or should I try the command that updates in addition also the Xorg packages?

Thank you.

V B, in order to allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue, at your earliest convenience, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D ? Please keep in mind the following:
1) The one to test is at the very top line at the top of the page (not the daily folder).
2) The release names are irrelevant.
3) The folder time stamps aren't indicative of when the kernel actually was released upstream.
4) Install instructions are available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds .

If testing on your main install would be inconvenient, one may:
1) Install Ubuntu to a different partition and then test this there.
2) Backup, or clone the primary install.

If the latest kernel did not allow you to test to the issue (ex. you couldn't boot into the OS) please make a comment in your report about this, and continue to test the next most recent kernel version until you can test to the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this issue is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon, next to the word Tags, located at the bottom of the report description:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-X.Y-rcZ

Where X, and Y are the first two numbers of the kernel version, and Z is the release candidate number if it exists.

If the mainline kernel does not fix the issue, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-X.Y-rcZ

Please note, an error to install the kernel does not fit the criteria of kernel-bug-exists-upstream.

Also, you don't need to apport-collect further unless specifically requested to do so.

Once testing of the latest upstream kernel is complete, please mark this report Status Confirmed. Please let us know your results.

Thank you for your understanding.

I installed yesterday evening

linux-headers-4.5.0-040500rc7-generic_4.5.0-040500rc7.201603061830_amd64.deb

and left the laptop on during the night (without suspending) and in the morning was still not frozen. Usually with the 4.2 kernel it would have frozen over night and it have frozen during this morning, but with the 4.5.0-040500rc7 the laptop did not freeze yet.

However, with 4.5.0-040500rc7 I cannot use the proprietary bcmwl driver for my wireless card and the software update does not work properly and while installing the above linux headers package it complained about missing dependencies, howver it did install it.

So I am keen to try a lower version kernel, like v4.4.5-wily hoping that it will still work (no freezes), but t the same time that I may be able perhaps with it to also use the proprietary bcmwl driver and I will hopefully get no software update problems a I get now with 4.5.0-040500rc7.

When I restarted my laptop in order to boot on 3.19 kernel so that I can uninstall the 4.5.0-040500rc7 kernel and install another kernel (like 4.4.5-wily) I got a system freeze: it seemed that it happened right after the system performed the logout. After starting, here is what I see in the syslog:

V B, regarding the mainline kernel test, it may be inconclusive due to you not being able to test all the proprietary software simultaneously.

You may want to try http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ as an alternative environment so you may test all proprietary software, and provide an additional data point.

Please do not manually attach crash files to reports, as it is not the preferred work flow. Instead, file it as a new report via a terminal:
sudo ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_lib_systemd_systemd-logind.0.crash

I cannot go to upgrade to that daily image because this is the company's laptop and I have work to do.

What I can tell more than that is that yesterday after lunch I installed the kernel 4.4.5-040405-generic (from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.4.5-wily/) and that it did not freeze since. In addition, with this kernel I have no problems using the apt to update software (as I was having with 4.5.0-040500rc7), but I could not install the proprietary wireless driver bcmwl-kernel-source for my wireless card (Broadcom Corporation BCM4352 802.11ac Wireless Network Adapter) because "kernel package linux-headers-4.4.5-040405-generic is not supported".

I may go and try an older kernel (but still something above 4.2, like 4.3) hoping that it will not freeze my laptop and that it will work with the bcmwl-kernel-source package. At this point I will move again the bug in status Confirmed, because I cannot give you more info (I cannot go and install the daily image of 16.04).

V B, fair enough. Trusty will get the kernel from Xenial soon as per https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack . Hence, this may be put on hold until either you get an exception from your company, or the enablement kernel is released for confirmation.

Hi,

Very bad news:

Latest security patch for kernel 3.19.0 (that is 3.19.0-58) which I installed today automatically through updates, freezes my laptop again with the same "HPD interrupt storm detected on connector" error that I was getting with the 4.2 kernel:

Apr 6 14:46:17 xxx-ubuntu dbus[1001]: [system] Activating service name='org.freedesktop.hostname1' (using servicehelper)
Apr 6 14:46:17 xxx-ubuntu dbus[1001]: [system] Successfully activated service 'org.freedesktop.hostname1'

se install nss-myhostname!
Apr 6 14:50:36 xxx-ubuntu sudo: pam_ecryptfs: pam_sm_authenticate: /home/xxx is already mounted
Apr 6 15:00:01 xxx-ubuntu CRON[12829]: (root) CMD (if [ -x /usr/sbin/backupninja ]; then /usr/sbin/backupninja; fi)
Apr 6 15:02:29 xxx-ubuntu kernel: [ 1916.954839] sound hdaudioC0D0: HDMI: ELD buf size is 0, force 128
Apr 6 15:02:29 xxx-ubuntu kernel: [ 1916.954877] sound hdaudioC0D0: HDMI: invalid ELD data byte 0
Apr 6 15:07:35 xxx-ubuntu kernel: [ 2222.796696] [drm] HPD interrupt storm detected on connector HDMI-A-1: switching from hotplug detection to polling

At the moment I switched back to kernel 3.19.0-51 that does not cause this problem, but the possibility that from now on all future security patches for 3.19.0 might freeze my laptop sounds very bad.

Marked this as duplicate of bug #1567237 (instead of the other way around) because I think that it would be probably easier to investigate the problem using the 3.19 series of kernels, because we know 2 consecutive kernel versions in that series, which first worked and second did not: 3.19.0-51 worked, then 3.19.0-58 did not. Also I think is better to focus firstly on the other bug because the other bug is higher importance and I thing that this is needed now, when both 3.19 and 4.2 series of kernels stopped working on my Laptop running Ubuntu 14.04.
