Bug Description

Ubuntu 15.10: After updrading to Linux 4.2.0-30-generic this morning via Software Updater, I cannot connect to internet (hardwire-I do not have wireless). After reverting back to 4.2.0-27- generic, the internet connection is restored. Same results from repeated attempts. TIA, Bill

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1549029/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

This bug is missing log files that will aid in diagnosing the problem. From a terminal window please run:

apport-collect 1549029

and then change the status of the bug to 'Confirmed'.

If, due to the nature of the issue you have encountered, you are unable to run this command, please add a comment stating that fact and change the bug status to 'Confirmed'.

This change has been made by an automated script, maintained by the Ubuntu Kernel Team.

I have been asked by automated email to run "apport-collect 1549029". I cannot connect to my Launchpad acct. with the 4.2.0-30-generic upgrade installed. I can do so with 4.2.0-27-generic installed. Do you want me to run "apport-collect 1549029" with the later installed?

I'd like to perform a kernel bisect to figure out which commit caused this regression. We need to identify the earliest kernel that did not exhibit the bug and the first kernel that did exhibit the bug.

Can you test the following kernels and post back?

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.2.8-ckt1-wily/
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.2.8-ckt2-wily/
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.2.8-ckt3-wily/

You don't have to test every kernel, just up until the first kernel that has this bug.

Thanks in advance!

I'd be happy to, but need some guidance. What steps do I need to perform once I go to each link?

Got some guidance from here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds.
Downloaded these 3 files:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.2.8-ckt1-wily/linux-headers-4.2.8-040208ckt1-generic_4.2.8-040208ckt1.201601081730_i386.deb

Then did sudo dpkg -i *.deb
Rebooted, selected "Advanced...." when grub appeared, selected ckt1 generic option for boot.
"Quiet Splash" was removed earlier from the BIOS.
Bootup ended at ~2.5 sec showing "---[end Kernel panic - not syncing: No working init found. Try passing init= option to kernel. See Linux Documentation/init.txt for guidance".
I let it sit for ~50 mins but no progress.
Rebooted using the "recovery mode" and "upstart" and got the same results.
Then downloaded the appropriate files for ckt2, but got the same results.
Didn't try ckt3.
Any suggestions on the init= option thingy?
Going to bed.
TIA,
Bill

Instead of the i386 files, I downloaded the amd64 files for the ckt1 thru 3 kernels.
When each booted to desktop, there was no connection to the internet.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.5 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

No change. I booted v4.5 twice and it completed the process to my normal desktop configuration, but no internet connection.
I went back to 4.2.0-27-generic and it booted up w/ the network connected.
