Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue for you. Can you try with the latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

Thank you for updating this bug report. Unfortunately, we can't fix it without more information.

Please run the following command which will attach necessary information:

apport-collect 153587

Bear in mind that you may need to install the python-launchpadlib package from the universe repository with 'sudo apt-get install python-launchpadlib'. Additionally, when prompted to give apport-collect permissions for Launchpad you will need to give it at least the ability to "Change Non-Private" data as it will be adding information to your bug report.

For your reference, the full description of procedures for kernel-related bug reports is available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/KernelTeamBugPolicies. Thanks in advance!

It´s still an issue unfortunately

mamo@xerxes:/boot$ sudo modprobe -v applesmc

FATAL: Error inserting applesmc (/lib/modules/2.6.31-15-generic/updates/dkms/applesmc.ko): No such device

I'm no kernel developer (or any kind of developer for the fact) but my theory is that when i boot in efi mode
the hardware is presented somehow differently in my laptop, than when I'm booting my macbook pro in compatibility mode (where the module actually loads)

Hence the module cant be matched to my running hardware configuration in efi mode.

I believe that no kernel update will solve this since applesmc is a dkms module meaning it doesn't come with regular new releases of the kernel but as a separate package compiled against the runnig kernel. My dkms sources are still the same version as before
.
Maybe we to get in contact with the maintainer of this module?

Added dkms as being affected. I am marking the linux package as being Triaged as there is enough information there for a developer to look at it, thank you for testing this.

Note: although applesmc is a dkms module, it is still maintained by the Kernel Team, so when one of their guys takes a look, they'll be able to determine the problem.

No, I don't see any bugs here on DKMS. Was the tool itself failing somewhere?

I don't know, I thought adding dkms would make sense as applesmc is a dkms module, it may be that at fault, and not necessarily the kernel.

Mario Limonciello (superm1) wrote :

No, just because a DKMS package exists and something doesn't work with it, doesn't mean it's the DKMS tool failing. No one has even posted any DKMS build logs.

If the error is FATAL: Error inserting applesmc (/lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/kernel/drivers/hwmon/applesmc.ko): No such device

then that's a problem with the source for applesmc itself not DKMS.

According to modinfo the author to applesmc is Nicolas Boichat. Has he even been informed about this issue?

just before anyone says anything else. Problem still persists.
