hibernation doesn't shutdown the computer

When I want to suspend the computer with the hibernate option, there's no feedback of what is happening, and the computer stays on.

Hibernation _works_: if I turn the computer off (after some minutes, just to be sure all pages are written on disk) & on again, it resumes correctly.

I've edited /etc/default/acpi-support to make suspend & hibernate work (disabling vbestate & post_video). I've tried to change hibernate_mode from shutdown to platform, but it doesn't change anything.

Have you a nvidia card, and the nvidia proprietary driver activacted into the restricted manager ? If so, could you deactivate it, and retry to hibernate ?

I confirm the bug on Intrepid on a desktop.
The computer not turn off automatically, I need to turn off it manually...

What I used to get out of HIBERNATE is that the computer does a little quiet thinking and then turns itself OFF.
Upon restarting, it picks up where it left off, and all rather quickly.

NOT ANYMORE (since November?).

Now, when I hit HIBERNATE (DELL VOSTRO 200) (2/24/2009 up-to-date UBUNTU)

and then RESTARTS without EVER turning off its power.

What happens after I turn off the power depends on WHEN I do that. There are 3 cases:

[1] If I turn off the power BEFORE 35 seconds, I must do a full (non-hibernate) STARTUP the next time I turn the power on.

[2] If I turn off the power JUST AS HIBERNATE STARTS ITS RESTART, (at 35-40 seconds ? after the loud fan or disk noise starts up again) then I get a true HIBERNATE, which restarts where I left things.

[3] If I let HIBERNATE's automatic RESTART go too far, and then turn off the power (say at 50 seconds), then when I restart the computer, I get a sort of ERROR-CORRECTING RESTART with slews of error messages.

I see the same bug; Vostro 200, Jaunty.

Using defaults in /etc/default/acpi-support is ok, except this "reboot instead of power down" annoyance. Pressing the power button at the DELL POST screen is enough to get what I need.

Changing hibernate_mode to "platform" also did not change anything.

sudo pm-hibernate
and
sudo s2disk

Both exhibit the problem. It's probably kernel ACPI support.

The same happens with 2 laptops I have bought recently:

- Medion Akoya laptop, i3 core based and HD3000 graphis card, and
- an Asus i7 core based with an NVidia 6100 graphics card, and no propiertary graphics driver

I'm using Precise Pangolin 64 bits.
