Bug Description

Occasionally my system freezes totally in 15.04 and 15.10. Switching to Console via Ctrl-Alt-F1 or rebooting via Ctrl-Alt-Del does not work.

Some days my system will run for many hours without any problem, and on other days I experience 2 or 3 freezes in an hour time.

I also tried to capture a trace dump as described in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DebuggingSystemCrash. Unfortunately this doesn't work. I tried it on the last 3 freezes, but nothing was written to the kern.log

Freek, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better.

Could you please test the latest upstream kernel available from the very top line at the top of the page from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D (the release names are irrelevant for testing, and please do not test the daily folder)? Install instructions are available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds . This will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue.

If the latest kernel did not allow you to test to the issue (ex. you couldn't boot into the OS) please make a comment in your report about this, and continue to test the next most recent kernel version until you can test to the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this issue is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon, next to the word Tags, located at the bottom of the report description:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-X.Y-rcZ

Where X, Y, and Z are numbers corresponding to the kernel version.

If the mainline kernel does not fix the issue, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-X.Y-rcZ

Please note, an error to install the kernel does not fit the criteria of kernel-bug-exists-upstream.

Once testing of the latest upstream kernel is complete, please mark this report's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results.

Thank you for your understanding.

Upgraded my kernel to 4.3-rc7. An hour later I got my first freeze again. This was already the 3rd or 4th freeze of the day.

Based on the other bug report (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1509723) I read the comment by katzke-ma and also tried 4.1.12-wily. So far my laptop is running many hours without any freeze at all .

I have the same problem on my Medion netbook. It has worked fine until I upgraded to 15.10.
I installed kernel 4.1.16 and I have had no problems with the kernel.
I have not had the same problem with my desktop PC.

I had exactly the same problems with my Acer ES1-711 laptop, and all is started when bios was upgraded from version 1.02 to 1.05 (Insydeh20). After much searching on forums (firstly i'm not suspected the bios has fault because on those days i tried many distros and was thinking problem is created by some package from downloaded updates, kernel or so...) finally decided to downgrade bios to a previous 1.02 version and problem is gone, at least now i can to properly shut down or restart...Recently the Xubuntu 15.10 kernel was upgraded to 4.2.0-27(from .0-25), will see how system is going now, if any problem - i'll post here a message, if all is ok - then problem created by bios, at least for me. p.s. "suggests shutdown/reboot issues can be worked around by blacklisting dw_dmac and dw_dmac_core. – bain Jan 13 at 17:11" - had to do this with EVERY distro of linux, if not - problem whit shutdown/restart persists(but not freezes). Cheers!

Freek, to keep this relevant to upstream, one would want check for, and test the latest mainline kernel (now 4.9) as it is released.

Could you please advise?
