Bug Description

I am experiencing systematic freezes since my kernel was automatically upgraded to 3.19.0-29. Same problem happens if I use kernel 3.19.0-30. If I use kernel 3.19.0-28 it does not freeze any more.

Behaviour is described with more details at

http://askubuntu.com/questions/679212/frequent-freezes-on-15-04-with-kernel-3-19-0-29

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream stable kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.19 stable kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for testing. The results would indicate this is either fixed in 3.19.8-ckt7 or it is a bug introduced by a SAUCE patch. I'll build and Ubuntu kernel with the 3.19.8-ckt7 updates. I'll post a link to the kernel shortly.

It sounds like this bug was introduced by a SAUCE patch, so a kernel bisect would be bext to identify the commit that introduced this bug.

I started a kernel bisect between Ubuntu 3.19.0-28 and 3.19.0-29. The kernel bisect will require testing of about 7-10 test kernels.

I built the first test kernel, up to the following commit:
44d23454131ed2b4fd667241ac8940b598d55aa1

The test kernel can be downloaded from:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~jsalisbury/lp1501281

Can you test that kernel and report back if it has the bug or not? I will build the next test kernel based on your test results.

Thanks in advance

Hi. I'm also experiencing the mentioned freezes, usually during boot.
I have tried the proposed kernel (3.19.0-29 up to commit 44d2345), and I'm still experiencing freezes with it.
Also, 3.19.0-28 is working fine for me too.

I can help with the bisection, but probably, only one kernel a day :(

It is still freezing *sometimes*. However, when it finishes booting,
brightness controls are not present.

Btw, there are some stack traces in the text console. Is there any way
to capture them in case they may be relevant?

I build the next test kernel based that the last test kernel still has the bug.

If you have a digital camera or mobile phone with a camera, you could take a picture and attach it to the bug.
