Bug Description
I am experiencing systematic freezes since my kernel was automatically upgraded to 3.19.0-29. Same problem happens if I use kernel 3.19.0-30. If I use kernel 3.19.0-28 it does not freeze any more.
Behaviour is described with more details at

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream stable kernel? Refer to https:/
If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-
If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-
If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".
Thanks in advance.

I tested the kernel v3.19.8-ckt7-vivid (more than 12 hours, with a system stress tool running) and it does not freeze.

I have also gone several days without a freeze, Samsung with all Intel
| Joseph Salisbury (jsalisbury) wrote : | #6 |
Thanks for testing. The results would indicate this is either fixed in 3.19.8-ckt7 or it is a bug introduced by a SAUCE patch. I'll build and Ubuntu kernel with the 3.19.8-ckt7 updates. I'll post a link to the kernel shortly.

Can you test this kernel and see if it resolves the bug?
| angus73 (angus73) wrote : | #8 |
I tested it and the bug is present using this kernel too.

It sounds like this bug was introduced by a SAUCE patch, so a kernel bisect would be bext to identify the commit that introduced this bug.
I started a kernel bisect between Ubuntu 3.19.0-28 and 3.19.0-29. The kernel bisect will require testing of about 7-10 test kernels.
I built the first test kernel, up to the following commit:
44d23454131ed2b
The test kernel can be downloaded from:
http://
Can you test that kernel and report back if it has the bug or not? I will build the next test kernel based on your test results.
Thanks in advance

Hi. I'm also experiencing the mentioned freezes, usually during boot.
I have tried the proposed kernel (3.19.0-29 up to commit 44d2345), and I'm still experiencing freezes with it.
Also, 3.19.0-28 is working fine for me too.
I can help with the bisection, but probably, only one kernel a day :(

@Miguel, can you confirm the bug still exists in Vivid with the latest updates?
| Miguel Rodríguez (migrax) wrote : | #13 |
@jsalisbury. No, but I can confirm that it still happens in Wily with the latest updates (kernel 4.2.0-19).
| Joseph Salisbury (jsalisbury) wrote : | #14 |
Thanks for the update, Miguel. Would you be able to test the kernel posted in comment #9?
| Miguel Rodríguez (migrax) wrote : | #15 |
I already did, as I tried to say in comment #11.

It is still freezing *sometimes*. However, when it finishes booting,
brightness controls are not present.
Btw, there are some stack traces in the text console. Is there any way
to capture them in case they may be relevant?

I build the next test kernel based that the last test kernel still has the bug.
If you have a digital camera or mobile phone with a camera, you could take a picture and attach it to the bug.

The bisect reported commit b4e1a97 as the first bad commit. I built a test kernel with this commit reverted. The test kernel can be downloaded from:

Can you test this kernel and see if it resolves this bug?
Note, with this test kernel you need to install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.
Thanks!

Vivid is EOL as of February[0]. Do you know if this bug also exists in Wily or Xenial?
| Miguel Rodríguez (migrax) wrote : | #32 |
It does exist in Wily. Will try xenial one of these days and report back about it.
This bug was nominated against a series that is no longer supported, ie vivid. The bug task representing the vivid nomination is being closed as Won't Fix.
This change has been made by an automated script, maintained by the Ubuntu Kernel Team.
