Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream stable kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.13 stable kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

YES. The old kernel seems to boot fine. The new kernel kernel panics with a flashing caps lock led almost every time.

andrew@andrew-Inspiron-3451:~$ apport-collect 1490846

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream stable kernel?

I will try if i can figure out how.

I am observing exactly the same failure on a HP 8530w. Kernel panic messages are the same as those on on the screen shots referred to in the original report.

These failures are intermittent. With 3.13.0-62 they inhibit the boot about 80% of the time. With 3.13.0-61 they also occurred, but less frequently. Release 3.13.0-58 was the last one booting reliably for me.

I was able to get the latest kernel 3.19.0-28-generic and it seems to be working fine. Not sure if it was the problem, but unsupported updates was checked by default from the manufacturer (DELL) which seems odd. I unchecked that and checked pre-supported updates and used the following commands to upgrade to the latest kernel:

sudo apt-get install --install-recommends linux-generic-lts-vivid xserver-xorg-core-lts-vivid xserver-xorg-lts-vivid xserver-xorg-video-all-lts-vivid xserver-xorg-input-all-lts-vivid libwayland-egl1-mesa-lts-vivid
