Bug Description
Problem appears on multiple computers with exact same kernel update, so clearly the problem is within the kernel. 3.19.0-16 did work without any problems.
Before sound worked great via HDMI, now the HDMI output is not visible in neither alsamixer nor pulseaudio. Audio via the headphone jack still works.
The computers are Intel-NUC-

Maarten Fonville, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available from the very top line at the top of the page (the release names are irrelevant for testing, and please do not test the daily folder) following https:/
If the test did not allow you to test to the issue (ex. you couldn't boot into the OS) please make a comment in your report about this, and continue to test the next most recent kernel version until you can test to the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon, next to the word Tags, located at the bottom of the report description:

Reverted to Linux 3.19.0-16-generic and the problem is gone.
Maarten Fonville, the next step is to fully reverse commit bisect from kernel 3.19 to 4.0.4 in order to identify the last bad commit, followed immediately by the first good one. Once this commit has been identified, then it may be reviewed as a candidate for backporting into your release. Could you please do this following https:/
Please note, finding adjacent kernel versions is not fully commit bisecting.
Thank you for your understanding.

I am experiencing this issue as well on my Intel NUC with the 3.19.0-18 kernel. Reverting to 3.19.0-16 works around the issue.
I tested(to be able to bisect the problem) the mainline kernels, and since 3.19.0-18.18 should be based on the 3.19.6 vanilla kernel, I tried the 3.19.6 (and higher) vanilla kernels, but none of them has this issue.
So the problem is in one of the ubuntu-specific changes. I don't have the time to bisect it within the coming days, so I would really appreciate it if one of the other people also impacted by the bug could perform this bisecting.
Maarten Fonville, unfortunately, if it's a Ubuntu specific change, bisecting Ubuntu commits (versus upstream) becomes an even more manual, and for many (myself included) a tediously complex process that goes between "eyeballing it" and git.
Hence, let this be marked Triaged for now, and the Ubuntu Kernel Team can follow up with you on this.

I'll report back any findings.

And another, not a NUC: Intel i7-4765T on ASRock H87M-ITX.
As comparison this one kept its HDMI audio: Intel i7-3770T on Asus P8H77-M Pro.
Both: 3.19.0-18 x86_64.
Of course, the first is the HTPC - now with an analog sound cable connected.

I can confirm this bug on a System76 Kudu Professional (i7-4900MQ).
Booting with 3.19.0-18-generic, I don't get any HDMI option in the Output tab in the sound settings UI.
Booting with 3.19.0-16-generic, I get an HDMI option and it works fine. So this is definitely a regression between 3.19.0-16-generic and 3.19.0-18-generic.

Make sure to request the correct driver when on CHV/SKL.
I'll also try these combinations:

Is there a workaround or anything I can run in 15.04 to fix this issue? My 15.04 install recently updated and now the HDMI audio output disappeared in sound devices and I have no audio at all (using a Gigabyte GA-Z87N-WIFI motherboard and Intel Core i5 4570S CPU). This is a pretty major issue for me.
| Stephen Thirlwall (l-sdt) wrote : | #53 |
You can boot to the previous kernel as a workaround.
As root, edit: /etc/default/grub
You should have this line in there:
GRUB_DEFAULT=0
Comment that out, and replace it with:
GRUB_
The part before the '>' is what you see at the top-level of the grub boot menu, and the part after is what you'd select to get the previous kernel. You may need to check your own boot menu to see if those strings match.
Then run: sudo update-grub
And then reboot. It should automatically take you to the old (working) kernel.
Don't forget to set GRUB_DEFAULT back to zero after the next kernel comes out.

I was experiencing this bug. With the upgrade to kernel 3.19.0-21-generic, the issue seemed to go away and my HDMI audio out returned. However, if the computer goes to sleep the HDMI audio disappears again. Restarting the computer is the only solution I have found to bring it back, but it again disappears if the computer suspends.
Mr_DNA, as this bug report is closed, if you would like your issue fixed file a new report via a terminal:

I would like to say that this might be more than just Intel. I'm experiencing this issue, with something HP calls "Integrated Realtek ALC 662".
The Live CDROM of Lubuntu 15.04, which boots under vmlinuz-
So that should be an easy to understand path from "working" to "not working".
Please note that Lubuntu is being hounded, by its users, for this sound issue.
Thank you and best regards,

Update from prior message: I fixed sound, using Pulseaudio. I had to "apt-get install pavucontrol", and then issue "alsa -force-reload". But now, sound works with vmlinuz-
