It looks like an older Trusty kernel was used for the test. It might be worthwhile to test the latest Trusty kernel, which is: 3.13.0-46.77

It might also be good to test the latest 3.13 upstream kernel to see if it also exhibits the bug. It can be downloaded from:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.13.11-ckt16-trusty/

It is fixed by upstream commit(merged to 3.14):

    a9b8241 ext4: merge uninitialized extents

I have sent the patch to ubuntu kernel mail list already.

BTW, the patch in #3 fixes xfstests(ext4/308) at the same time too.

This bug is awaiting verification that the kernel in -proposed solves the problem. Please test the kernel and update this bug with the results. If the problem is solved, change the tag 'verification-needed-trusty' to 'verification-done-trusty'.

If verification is not done by 5 working days from today, this fix will be dropped from the source code, and this bug will be closed.

See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to enable and use -proposed. Thank you!
