Bug Description

I see this in the dmesg

[ 0.649779] tpm_tis 00:05: 1.2 TPM (device-id 0x0, rev-id 78)
[ 0.695984] tpm_tis 00:05: TPM is disabled/deactivated (0x6)
[ 0.751948] tpm_tis 00:05: A TPM error (6) occurred attempting to read a pcr value

What should I do?

Having the X1 Carbon Thinkpad Laptop here on Ubuntu 14.10 ...

Thanks for any clues

Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a prior kernel version where you were not having this particular problem?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.0 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Michael Heuberger, as per http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-x1-carbon-type-20a7-20a8 an update to your computer's buggy and outdated BIOS is available (1.20). If you update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate does it change anything?

If it doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette .

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful. As well, you don't have to create a new bug report.

Once the BIOS is updated, and the information above is provided, then please mark this report Status Confirmed.

Thank you for your understanding.

Thanks for that Christopher. Unfortunately the Lenovo link does not provide any BIOS updates for Linux, so looks like I am unable to update BIOS on a Linux machine.

And here is the output to the above command:
$ sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date
GRET40WW (1.17 )
09/02/2014

Let me know how to proceed.

I've noticed the same message in my dmesg output. I've already upgraded my BIOS to the latest one for T420:

$ sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date
83ET76WW (1.46 )
07/05/2013

@michael.heuberger: I've downloaded the BIOS Update Bootable CD: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/migr-77076#make and used geteltorito to convert the image and dd to write it to USB. You can follow the guide here: http://www.lenzg.net/archives/358-Updating-the-BIOS-on-my-ThinkPad-T440-without-Windows-or-a-DVD-Drive.html

@penalvch, why status incomplete? jkbkot just confirmed, the bug still exists, even on the latest version ...

I confirm the reported TPM error message "A TPM error (6) occurred after attempting to read a pcr value", which recently started to appear during boot on my ThinkPad T420s running Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS, currently with kernel 3.19.0-30.

I followed RikT's comment at https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1086005#p1086005 to disable the security chip in the BIOS (which is different from the default setting "inactive"), since I am not using it anyway. Now I only get

$ dmesg | grep TPM
[ 0.540023] ima: No TPM chip found, activating TPM-bypass!

which does not show up during boot (no error). My BIOS version is 8CET51WW (1.31) released at 11/29/2011.
