Bug Description

Screen freezes when I watch video in VLC media player. Moving mouse is of no use and Ctrl + Alt + T short cut does not launch terminal. But I Could hear the audio even after screen freeze.

If I press Ctrl + Alt + F1 and wait for several minutes switches to console. Then switching to GUI brings back the screen and I am able to work as usual.

This is not a bug in VLC, it just triggers the code path within ther kernel which causes the issue. Looking at the kernel OOPS it can be confirmed that the problem is within the kernel (intel graphics driver code). Please change the package back to Linux from VLC.

I too faced the same issue now in my Lenovo Y510p running Ubuntu 14.10 64bit.
No keys work only I can hear the audio. I force shutdown to get back my laptop to work.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.19 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

I have installed linux 3.19. The bug occurs at random time and I am not sure when I will be able to reproduce it. I will test and get back at the latest.

https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=64431#c24 has the same stack trace. Will try to check this weekend if the bug is fixed in drm-intel-nightly branch.

If a .deb is available for that kernel I can use it directly which may speed up my testing.

Prasanna Kumar, as per http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-l-series-laptops/thinkpad-l430 an update to your computer's buggy and outdated BIOS is available (2.63). If you update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate does it change anything?

If it doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette .

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful. As well, you don't have to create a new bug report.

Once the BIOS is updated, and the information above is provided, then please mark this report Status Confirmed.

Thank you for your understanding.

Rebooted, but it recurred. Used Ctl-Alt-F1 to switch to console to VLC 2.2.4 was still running.
Sometimes it resumes.
Previous comments state mainline kernel v3.19 fault.
I am running: Linux cs1 4.4.0-36-generic #55-Ubuntu SMP Thu Aug 11 18:01:55 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Could it be my Nvidia graphics card driver from Nvidia?
I'm going to try the purge and install nvidia-364 I found on the web to fix Nvidia problems to see if that takes care of this.

Art Pina, it will help immensely if you filed a new report with the Ubuntu repository kernel (not mainline/upstream) via a terminal:
