Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a prior kernel version where you were not having this particular problem?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.19 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

I was getting ready to install updates, when I ran into this problem for a second time. I'm pretty certain that this has something to do with VMWare Player's kernel modules. For the second time, I was shutting down VMWare Player when the crash happened.

I'll update the kernel, and report back in a few days (or earlier if it crashes again).

Ok, crash happened again in 3.13.0-45-generic.

Unfortunately there were no errors recorded.

The symptoms I noticed, happen in this order;

1) Mouse, and keyboard start experiencing high latency periods.
2) Shutdown windows 7 running in VMWare Player v7.0.0
3) Linux system completely locks up, and requires hard reset.

I can't say for certain if VMWare is causing the problems, or just exacerbating them. I believe this was not happening in 3.13.0-43. I'm going to reboot my system into 3.13.0-43 just to verify that however.

I think this describes the same bug as described in https://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=14073&nbn=3

Actually I am still experiencing this on Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS (Kernel 4.4.0-101-generic). In particular I have seen that when I run a lot of Docker containers and they are killed because of OOM errors (because of using more memory than given to them by Docker), then frequently the machine freezes/dies and outputs the message below into the syslog:
