Synaptics Touchpad not detected as touchpad in "Mouse and Touchpad" settings after updating kernel to 3.13.0-44-generic on Acer Aspire E5-471, two-finger scrolling not working

After udating my system and rebooting, I noticed that the two-finger scrolling had stopped working. When I checked the "Mouse and Touchpad" settings, only a mouse was listed.
