Bug Description

on Macbook Pro 8.2 (Early 2011 15"), and maybe some other models,
if you will try to launch 14.10 Ubuntu LiveCD "as usual", you will be stuck at "i8042: No controller found" message

(but this error message is not pointing to a particular problem which hangs a booting process --- because the same error message could be found at dmesg of successful booting with nomodeset option. it looks like the boot-breaking problem happens a bit later after an error message above)

Workaround is to edit the booting option by adding "nomodeset", but such a step could be unobvious to unexperienced users. Ideally, if nomodeset option is really "must have" for booting some computers, the booting process should automatically check hardware IDs and detect if nomodeset should be enabled for the computer in use (at the early stage of booting) -- and user still would be able to remove nomodeset by editing the boot options, if there's a need

dmesg of successful booting with nomodeset option also exhibits many errors and problems

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1406832/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.
