screen hangs on unity with i915 kernel driver

thinkpad x230i with ubuntu 14.10, unity

Screen hangs ~1/day for 10-20 seconds. i get the following in dmesg afterwards.
had some screen hangs with 13.10 and 14.04 but they get worse now.

pressing "ctrl+alt+f1" and waiting for 20 seconds until its a tty1, then going back to tty7 "solves" the issue.

i installed the 3.18 mainline kernel and will report when that happens again. since i dont know how to trigger that it will take some time.
