Bug Description

The ELAN (not Elantech) touchpad in my Medion Akoya P2214T (MD 99430) laptop/tablet hybrid is not properly recognized. Both the touchscreen and the touchpad function as a regular mouse, but the touchpad shows up as an ITE Tech. Inc. ITE Device(8910) pointer in xinput (see attachment). Multitouch and scrolling however, do not function, nor do options for this show up in the Mouse & Touchpad options in Ubuntu 14.10 64-bit.

Mizuti, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Could you please test the latest upstream kernel available from the very top line at the top of the page (the release names are irrelevant for testing, and please do not test the daily folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue.

If the test did not allow you to test to the issue (ex. you couldn't boot into the OS) please make a comment in your report about this, and continue to test the next most recent kernel version until you can test to the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested exactly shown as:
kernel-fixed-upstream-3.18

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

Thanks for the reply.
I installed kernel 3.18, which booted normally, but the same problems as before exist. The mouse is not recognized properly and the keyboard does not respond at all (it shows some messages about maximum number of hid usages being exceeded at startup).
xinput now only shows a single ITE Tech. Inc. ITE Device(8910) entry rather than the two it did before.

Mizuti, the issue you are reporting is an upstream one. Could you please report this problem to the appropriate mailing list (linux-input) by following the instructions _verbatim_ at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/kernel ?

Please provide a direct URL to your e-mail to the mailing list once you have made it so that it may be tracked via http://vger.kernel.org/vger-lists.html .

Thank you for your understanding.

Just digging out this 3-year old Thread to tell that this is still not fixed in 2017.

Having these two Medion Notebooks:

- Medion Akoya S2217
- Medion Akoya S2218

with the same Touchpad:

- ITE Device(8910)

Tested with:

- ubuntu 16.04
- ubuntu 16.10
- ubuntu 17.04

And there is no:

- Multitouch
- Scrooling
- other Features

just plain pointing device (which makes live much harder!)

Please tell what to do getting this one fixed one day

Thank's for all the hard work!
Greetings

You need to boot with an Ubuntu kernel: e.g. 4.10.0-xx-generic.

But I can't boot stock ubuntu because I have a 32-bit bootloader and boot a 64-bit OS. (Intel Microsoft Atom Deal)

For that reason I use isorespin.sh (http://linuxiumcomau.blogspot.com/) and use the latest mainlinekernel to be able to use networking (wifi)

I can try respin without mainlinekernel - the question: How can I subbmit apport while have no networking working?

Yeah, sorry, I stopped updating because, whenever I updated to a newer kernel, my keyboard would stop working (the current kernel I had to rebuild with a number for HID increased to get the keyboard operational), which was a more serious problem for me than the lack of multitouch.

I will give the stock Linux Mint 18.2 and/or Ubuntu 17.04 a try from a USB-drive in the weekend, see if anything has been solved more recently.

A small update: I have upgraded my system to Linux Mint 18.1. However, there are problems installing new kernels and it has stuck with the old 3.16.0-24 kernel from before the upgrade. From the update manager I tried installing both the standard 4.4 kernel that should've been installed in the upgrade and the latest possible one, 4.10-24. In both cases there are errors with the locale en_US:utf8 and, more relevant here, it shows there's an issue in the driver for the Elantech touchpad. Despite these errors, the update manager says the kernel installed, but when rebooting I cannot boot into the newer kernels. What should I do?

Kai-Heng Feng (kaihengfeng) wrote :

Does "cannot boot into the newer kernels" mean the boot process is stuck at some point?
Remove "quite splash" from kernel parameter, and add "debug" to it before boot.

Mizuti (robgonorl) wrote :

It means Grub doesn't recognize it at all and I thus can't select it. Actually, Grub still shows it as Mint 17.2 (even though it has been upgraded to 18.1). Also, every time I reboot the update manager still shows the newer kernels as a level 5 update to be installed, so my guess is it never gets to install them properly.

It appears that there is a variant of this touchpad on the Medion S2218 / MD99590 laptop, which is also affected. The device reports the same name, but a different USB ID 04f3:074a.

See https://marc.info/?l=linux-input&m=150150074208646&w=3

Tested with 4.13-rc3, this touchpad only supports single (left) clicks, no right click and no multitouch gestures.

Please advise on how I can help debug this.

As far as I know, it's impossible to follow them and it looks as though they have not been doing anything anymore to fix the issue. Kai-Heng Feng did his best and sent them an e-mail, but I never got a response from them. He suggested to ask ITE Tech to debug the issue, but I've given up and have upgraded to a new laptop.

To be fair, it’s vendor’s responsibility to provide driver for their devices.

Wow, that's really good news! When I contacted Medion a few years ago about this, they told me that they do not in any way support Linux, so I was on my own. Maybe they're finally starting to see the increasing Linux userbase, really good development. Best of luck, I hope they manage to get it to work for you eventually.

So here i am sitting scrolling Down with my Touchpad (Scroll Gesture not working) but Toupad is.

Solution: I have disabled SecureBoot and was able to "make install" of the akoya-fixup from git.
After restart the Touchpad was working on Ubuntu 16.04-r3 with latest Mainline-Kernel .

After that i installed a complete new Version of Ubuntu 17.10 with full whip of Ubuntu 16.04-r3, since i wanted to install the Git Solution on 17.10

And to my Surprise the mouse was working out of the Box (SecureBoot still disabled).

So this should also work:
*make a Bootable USBStick of Ubuntu 17.10
 *
and Choos Try Ubuntu when u are ask.

Ubuntu 17.10 has a lot of Advantages over 16.04 when using the Medion p2214t like
 * preinstalled rotating
 * preinstalled touchscreen keyboard

The Other solution on Ubuntu 16.04 without disabling SecureBoot would be a much more complicated since your would have to do kernal signing in order to get your new kernel module singed properly

Hi Pat (paett) you write in #122

"So here i am sitting scrolling Down with my Touchpad (Scroll Gesture not working) but Toupad is."

So does it work or not? Legacy (simple pointing device) is working since long time. But it's not usable like this. The question is how you a scrolling on the touchpad without gestures?

"After that i installed a complete new Version of Ubuntu 17.10 with full whip of Ubuntu 16.04-r3, since i wanted to install the Git Solution on 17.10

Again, what is working? Simple pointing device or touch gestures (e.g. two finger scrolling etc.)?

Thank's for your efforts and hopefully ELAN Microelectronics Corp. is getting things done (even tough I doubt because this device is years old and probably not manufactured anymore!)
