Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.18 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

I tried running the 3.18 generic kernel but system did not want to boot. It could not detect boot hard drive or something to that effect.

I have Kingston SSDNow V300 (SV300S37A/240G) hard drive.

I installed generic kernel 3.17.1 and touchpad is still not detected. As previously stated 3.18-rc2 does not work on my machine.

What else can I do?

I've the same laptop and I make it work by using the following flag in /etc/default/grub
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="i8042.noloop=1"

This post gave me the solution:
http://forum.novatech.co.uk/archive/index.php/t-26251.html

After that you have to recreate the boot grub entry (I'm on ArchLinux: grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg. I think that in Ubuntu the command is "update-grub").
Then reboot and you will have a fully functional trackpad (mine it is detected by xorg as "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad").
