Black screen after resume from suspend

Bug Description

If the system suspends due to the timeout specified in power settings, or because I closed the notebook lid, I get a black screen with a movable mouse pointer after I resume. Pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1 followed by Ctrl-Alt-F7 brings me back to my desktop from the black screen. Curiously, if I suspend using the "Suspend" option from the menu in the top right corner of the desktop, I can wake the system up without the black screen.

Getting Blank/Off screen on resume. CTRL F1 - F7 do nothing, and no mouse on screen.

Suspend/Resume was working great in the last kernel 3.2.0-67
Issue for me started in kernel 3.13.0-33, and remains in 3.13.0-34

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.17 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

I was not able to reproduce the issue with the 3.17 kernel. The system woke up fine after each of several lid-closed and idle-time suspends.

Bruce Backman, the next step is to fully reverse bisect the kernel in order to identify the fix commit. Could you please do this following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection#How_do_I_reverse_bisect_the_upstream_kernel.3F ?
