Bug Description

.iso 20140718 (and 17) boot to background, two flashing icons, no desktop. Ctrl-Alt-F1 and tried ubuntu-bug which said there were missing packages.

Lenovo M58p:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00GHz

ubuntu-bug is from utopic 64 installed with a netbook on a USB drive. Utopic usually boots on M58p however several times it would only boot with nomodeset.

jerrylamos, as per http://download.lenovo.com/express/ddfm.html an update to your BIOS is available (5CKT77A). If you update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BiosUpdate does it change anything? If it doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful. As well, you don't have to create a new bug report. As well, you don't have to create a new bug report.

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette .

Thank you for your understanding.

I've been trying every day to boot utopic .iso since I filed this bug.

Daily-live current image 20140720 finally booted and installed successfully.

At this point the bug is not reproducible so could be marked solved however that is done.
