The key combination Fn+<brightness up/down> trigger the brightness overlay in the top right corner but the actual brightness does not change. See attached screenshot

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.16 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Hi, I've tested with
3.16.0-031600rc1-generic #201406160035 SMP Mon Jun 16 04:36:15 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
with the same result. The overlay is shown and changes the brightness scale but not the actual screen brightness

This might be fixed in the upcoming 3.18 kernel by this patch:

ACPI / video: force vendor backlight on Lenovo Ideapad Z570

There is a better fix queued up for the upstream 4.1 kernel. It consists of these two patches:

acpi: video: Allow forcing native backlight on non win8 machines
acpi: video: Add enable native backlight quirk for Lenovo Ideapad Z570
