You may need to run the following:

sudo apt-get install -f
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update

Then re-install the package.

If that does not resolve your issue, please mark the bug as "Confirmed"

This did not actually fix the problem . The only way I was able to fix this was to run the install via dpkg and use --force-overwrite.

Tried the following several times which did not work:

sudo apt-get install -f
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update

Then re-install the package.

What did work was:

cd /var/cache/apt/archives/
sudo dpkg -i --force-overwrite linux-image-3.5.0-51-generic_3.5.0-51.77~precise1_i386.deb

As James D suggested. Worked for me.
