Bug Description

The touchpad functions properly on my X550CA laptop under Windows 8 64bit. It doesn't work properly with Ubuntu 14.04 64-bit. The cursor doesn't move at all or just barely from time to time. Right or left-click doesn't work. The touchpad is not properly recognized by the OS. It seems to recognized it as “PS/2 Logitech Wheel Mouse”, as shown by:
$ xinput --list

sunnycloud, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Could you please test the latest upstream kernel available (3.15-rc7) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-3.15-rc6

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

I have the same problem with my asus F552LD. The odd thing is that when i try an ubuntu 14.04 live cd on the shop for this machine all work perfectlyalso the touchpad. So, why now the touchpad doesn't work properly?

maniuz, thank you for your comment. So your hardware and problem may be tracked, could you please file a new report with Ubuntu by executing the following in a terminal while booted into the default Ubuntu kernel (not a mainline one) via:
ubuntu-bug linux

Maniuz,
could You please give mi some dmesg from the live cd when booting with "i8042.debug=1" ? This will help me debug the problem.

Interesting. I am running the latest Kernel and I don't have this bug, but another one. My touchpad works fine, as do left and right mouse buttons. However, whenever I keep using the touchpad instead of an external mouse consistently: ubuntu freezes within a period of 2 to 25 minutes. I kept thinking that it must be for another reason that this is happening, but it definitely ONLY happens (the freezing) if I use no external Mouse for my ASUS X550-C.
Anyone else has this?

Hi,

The same problem here with my ASUS X550CA. Touchpad does not work AT ALL on any recent Ubuntu version (and Mint, Debian live, Manjaro and some other distros as well).

Cursor jumps and the system freezes for a few minutes.

However I have just tested PClinuxOS in live mode (KDE and Mate versions, burned on DVD-RW, as Unetbootin did not work on this distro) and the touchpad works fine for movements and clicks! (the only thing is the lack of scrolling -vertical or two-finger scrolling).
PClinuxOS uses kernel: 3.18.1-pclos1
There's no way of changing settings for the touchpad, as only the USB mouse gets recognised in the Control Centre...
Anyway, hope this helps some people who want the touchpad to work somehow on a GNU/Linux distro...Thanks
