Bug Description

Since kernel 3.13-rc1, my computer will not boot.

WORKAROUND: In kernel >=3.13-rc1+ use kernel boot parameter: radeon.audio=0 (Will boot but no audio over HDMI)

OR :

1. Install ubuntu from an USD thumbdrive (Booting with nomodeset).
2. Boot ubuntu (with nomodeset)
3. Install the old 3.12 kernel
4. Boot on 3.12 without nomodeset (and I guess, with radeon.audio=1 as defaut argument.)
5. Do this command : "xrandr --output HDMI-0 --set audio on"
6. Now you can reboot with any kernel (have to confirm this only tested 3.13rc1 and 3.14) without radeon.audio=0 and with audio over HDMI.

This would be a kernel issue (not X.org/userspace). You would be much better off posting to something like dri-devel list or somewhere else that actually gets view from open-source radeon devs.

I have a system running Windows with a Radeon HD4550. I might try to tun a LiveUSB of 14.04 there to see if it boots correctly.

Trie to set it as a kernel issue but was not allowed to...

Bug8 Johsnon, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. As per http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M2NE_SLI/HelpDesk_Download/ an update to your BIOS is available (1201). If you update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BiosUpdate does it change anything? If it doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful.

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette .

Thank you for your understanding.

None of the BIOS updates indicate that they would possibly fix this issue. BIOS updates should not be recommended/required unless the BIOS changelog indicates a potential fix.

Hello, thanks for your interest.

You made some weird changes without waiting for my reply, this issue is with my HD4550, nothing to do with the motherboard.
I can replicate the bug on several other motherboards, with different chipset ( will list it if needed).

And sorry about the workaroud, it only works in 3.12 (but once made in 3.12 it seems to be also working in 3.14, but I need to reproduce it to confirm.)

Okay, I have found a very weird way to have a fully working 3.12+ kernel :

1. I install ubuntu from an USD thumbdrive (Booting with nomodeset).
2. I boot ubuntu (with nomodeset)
3. I install the old 3.12 kernel
4. I boot on 3.12 without nomodeset (and I guess, with radeon.audio=1 as defaut argument.)
5. I do this command : "xrandr --output HDMI-0 --set audio on"
6. I can now reboot with any kernel (have to confirm this only tested 3.13rc1 and 3.14) without radeon.audio=0 and with audio over HDMI.

I noticed you removed this command "xrandr --output HDMI-0 --set audio on" from my original post, but I think it is essential to understand this problem, if you need any information, please ask me, I will reply quickly.

Daniel Letzeisen, that's not how BIOS updates work, as vendors don't report all results for all platforms. For more on this, please read https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BiosUpdate .

Can you test this kernel and post back if it resolves the bug or not?

Is that ok now ?
And what about my AN8 as it is up to date ?

@Joseph Salisbury: Thanks, I installed it and tried to boot it, but it fails, I attached a picture of what I get (I booted without quiet).

It must be a problem with the Saphire model, or something else... But I'm not sure what, as I tried it in several machines.

Anyway since it seems I'm the only one getting this, I think I will put a "Linux incompatible" sticker on the card and repurpose it in a windows machine, or a distro that still have kernel 3.12.

Thanks you all for trying to help me.
